because they do not see their pastors preaching right through the Bible in their weekly sermons? Could it be that some do not feel equipped to engage with every part of the Bible because they have only ever heard a limited selection of Bible passages expounded for them by their pastors? Perhaps their piecemeal reading and studying of Scripture is just a reflection of what they have seen modeled by their ministers of the word.
